Help “Sack” Summer Hunger in Manatee County!

When summer begins, Meals on Wheels PLUS and The Food Bank of Manatee need your help to “Sack” summer hunger for Manatee County residents of all ages.

There is a greater need for food over the summer. Please help us increase our buying power for Meals on Wheels PLUS and The Food Bank of Manatee by making a financial donation. Thanks to a $1:$1 community match from the Steven and Natalee Herrig Family Foundation and Steve and Sara Bayard, all donations up to $75,000 will be doubled this summer! Just $5 provides a summer hunger sack. Your gift of $10 will be doubled to provide 4 sacks!

Text2Give gifts will also be matched. Text FEEDMANATEE to 243725 to give.

Some of our volunteers migrate North for the summer, leaving a number of routes without volunteer drivers to deliver the approximately 700 meals-a-day to homebound seniors. You can fill the gap in coverage by becoming a home-delivered meals volunteer. Bring a friend or your kids to lend a hand! Click here to register to volunteer.

Hunger Doesn’t Take a Summer Break

More than 60% of the students in Manatee County are on free and reduced breakfast and lunch programs. These meals are important to ensure that the students have proper nutrition to grow and absorb their daily lessons. Many kids wonder where their next meal will come from when they begin summer break.

During the week, The School District of Manatee County’s “Kids Eat Free” bus delivers hot lunches throughout the county and on Fridays The Food Bank of Manatee joins, offering free weekend food sacks to students. These sacks contain 6 meals and snacks to provide nutrition for students over the weekend.

Students can also get a weekend food sack at any Manatee County Public Library. For more information, visit http://foodbankofmanatee.org/ssh/.

You can help provide weekend food sacks to food-insecure children this summer by giving a gift. There are 3 easy ways to donate:

Lunch and Games with the Bradenton Marauders

The Bradenton Marauders were a hit with the clients and staff at Daybreak Adult Day Center! A group of players from Pirate City dropped by to help set up and serve lunch to the Daybreak clients. Before mealtime, the ball players had time to participate in some morning activities including card games, painting and coloring, and a word-phrase game that almost broke a Daybreak word-count record. Daybreak staff thoroughly enjoyed the extra helping hands and did not hesitate taking a quick photo opportunity with these up-and-coming star athletes. Click here to see more photos on Facebook.
