The Food Bank of Manatee Helps End Summer Hunger
Did you know 55% of school-aged kids in Manatee benefit from free or reduced priced meals at school? The Food Bank of Manatee needs support from our community to help provide meals to food insecure children during the summer months. This year, the “Summer Sack Hunger” campaign will help bridge that hunger gap by distributing 1,000 weekend food sacks for kids for 9 weeks starting June 9th, 2017 through August 4th. The 25th Annual Letter Carriers’ Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive
On Saturday, May 13th, postal carriers in Manatee County will pick up non- perishable food items along their routes and partner with The Food Bank of Manatee by collecting critical food donations. Manatee County residents can leave bags of non-perishable foods by their mailboxes on May 13th. To ensure donations are received by The Food Bank of Manatee, residents can drop off donations between 1 pm and 5 pm at the following post offices: Palmetto – 520 7th St West, Palmetto, the Ellenton – 2605 72nd Ave East, Ellenton, Parrish – 12144 US Highway 301N, Parrish, Bradenton Beach 116 Bridge St, Bradenton Beach, or The Food Bank of Manatee, 811 23rd Ave E.
“Too many people in this country are going hungry,” NALC president Fredric Rolando said. “We know this to be true because we see it as we deliver to every address in America at least six days a week.” Sadly, statistics back this up. Nearly 50,000 individuals in Manatee County are food insecure, of which 17,940 are children. 135,000 households in Manatee County (12%) are below the poverty line and another 31% are in danger of falling into poverty, earning less than the cost of living.

2017 Tropical Nights: Sunsets in Paradise
This year’s Tropical Nights: Sunsets in Paradise was certainly a huge success! Tropical Nights is the biggest fundraiser of the year benefiting the PLUS Programs of Meals on Wheels PLUS of Manatee. An island inspired evening included a steel drum welcome, a tropical themed menu masterfully prepared by our award-winning chefs, and a “Parched Pineapple,” this year’s signature drink, at the Cool Today Lounge.
As the orange sun set, guests lined up for dessert at the Purple Belle Ice Cream Truck for freshly scooped cones. Meals on Wheels PLUS chief executive officer Maribeth Phillips and board Chair Michelle Detweiler welcomed guests along with emcee Bob Harrigan, who delivered his promise of great weather as well as his humor. Guest paddles started flying as the auctioneer, Ken Sons, started taking bids on great trips and dinner packages during the live auction. The warm Florida night really heated up as The Tropical Ave Band took the stage and got the guests moving on the dance floor.
Meals on Wheels PLUS will certainly surprise and delight guests next year for the big 25th Annual Tropical Nights on April 7th, 2018. Click here to see pictures from Tropical Nights.
